Welcome. The next thirty days will turn you from someone who knows a few creepy stories into someone who can hold a room with one. We're working specifically with historical and folk horror — real cases and old tales — because that material has weight modern horror can't fake. Today's job: pick the three stories you'll practice on for the rest of this program.

Five minutes today. Don't overthink it. You'll probably swap one out by Day 14 and that's fine.

What makes a good practice story

1. It's real, or it's a folk tale that was treated as real for generations. Modern creepypasta won't carry the same weight on the back of your tongue.
2. It has a where and a when. "In a village in Scotland, sometime" is harder to tell than "Auchindrain, 1857."
3. Something specific happens. A door, a body, a sound, a witness. Not a vibe.
4. It can be told in under five minutes. Save the multi-generational sagas for later.

If you're stuck, pick from this list

Each of these is well-documented, atmospheric, and has been told a thousand times for good reason. Choose three that pull at you.

Today's task

1. Pick three. Write them down on paper or in a note app. Beside each, write one sentence about why it grabs you.
2. If you want help shortlisting, paste this into Claude or another AI:

I'm building a small repertoire of three historical and folk horror stories I'd like to learn to tell out loud — atmospheric, well-documented, under five minutes each. I'm drawn to [region/era/themes — e.g. "British Isles, pre-1900, anything to do with thresholds and disappearances"]. Suggest 8 candidates I could choose three from. For each: one sentence on why it works as a told story, and one on what makes it specifically eerie rather than gory.

You're done for the day. Tomorrow we work on opening lines.

Most beginners start their stories the same way: "So there's this old legend about…". The room mentally checks out. Today you're going to learn to open with something that makes a listener stop talking mid-sip.

We'll write three different opening lines for one of your pilot stories and decide which one earns its place.

The three openings that almost always work

1. The body opening. Start with a thing found, a person missing, a witness already running. "On Boxing Day 1900, a relief boat reached Eilean Mòr and found three doors locked, one chair overturned, and no men on the island."
2. The date opening. A specific Tuesday. A specific season. Anchors the listener in time before you've earned a bigger ask. "On the morning of February 9th, 1855, the people of east Devon woke up to a hundred miles of footprints in the snow."
3. The question opening. A real question with no satisfying answer. "What killed the lighthouse keepers on Eilean Mòr is something the Northern Lighthouse Board still doesn't agree on."

What to avoid

1. "Long, long ago…" — kills the historical weight.
2. "You guys are gonna LOVE this one." — promises a payoff and tells the listener you don't trust the story to land on its own.
3. Throat-clearing context. Background goes in line three or four, never line one.

Today's task

1. Pick one of your three pilot stories. Draft three opening lines: one body, one date, one question. Keep each under twenty words.
2. Read each out loud. Whichever one you say without your voice going up at the end is your winner.
3. If you want a second opinion, drop them into Claude:

Here are three candidate opening lines for a 4-minute spoken telling of [story name]. The setting is informal but literary — think a small group around a table, not a stage. Tell me which line earns the next sentence the fastest, and why. Don't soften the feedback.

Folk horror lives in landscape. The bog. The lighthouse. The wrong field. Before anything happens in your story, the place needs to be alive in the listener's head — because the place is going to be doing half the haunting.

Today we write a place description that earns its keep in three sentences or fewer.

The rule

Two senses, one wrong note. Pick two sensory details that establish the place — sight, sound, smell, the feel of air. Then one detail that's slightly off. The mismatch is what tells the listener something is going to happen here.

Two senses (sight, sound). One wrong note (the silence).

Today's task

1. For one of your pilot stories, write three sentences of place. Two sensory details, one wrong note. No more than 60 words.
2. Read it out loud. If the wrong note doesn't make you slow down at it, rewrite the wrong note.
3. If you don't have the sensory detail in your head, do quick image research. Ten minutes of Google Images and old engravings are usually enough. If the place is gone, ask AI:

I'm writing a short atmospheric description of [place name] as it would have looked around [year]. I need: two sensory details (sight, sound, smell, or feel of the air) that would have been ordinary at the time, and one slightly-wrong detail that a person standing there might have noticed. Be specific and historically grounded — not generic Halloween imagery. Avoid clichés (no fog, no full moons unless documented).

When you tell a historical story, the temptation is to prove you've done your research. Don't. The listener doesn't want a Wikipedia page. They want one detail that drops them into the year so completely they forget they're sitting in a bar in 2026.

Today: pick your one period detail and trust it to do the work.

What makes a good period detail

1. It's physical. A thing held, worn, smelled, carried. Not an abstract noun like "superstitious times."
2. It's working. The detail is doing something in the scene — being lit, being eaten, being washed. Not just sitting there as set dressing.
3. It's specific to that year, not just "old-timey." "A tallow candle" is better than "a candle." "A penny dreadful" is better than "a magazine."

Today's task

1. Pick the moment in one of your stories that needs to land hardest. Write the sentence before it.
2. Insert one period detail — physical, working, specific. Cut anything else that's trying to do the same job.
3. Read the sentence aloud. If you can picture exactly what your hands would be doing, you got it.

If you need a research lift

I'm writing a short spoken historical narrative set in [place, year]. The listener needs to be dropped into the scene without a paragraph of context. Give me 6 small, physical, sensory details that would have been ordinary in [place, year] — things a person would be holding, wearing, smelling, or hearing. No clichés (avoid "horse-drawn carriages," "gas lamps" unless I ask). I want the texture of daily life, not the headline-level signifiers.

Real historical horror has gaps. The log entry stops mid-sentence. The witness was never interviewed. The body was buried before the inquest. Beginners try to paper over the gaps because they feel like weakness. They're not. The gaps are the scariest part.

Today you'll learn to make your listener feel a missing record.

How to use a gap

1. Name the source, then name what's not in it. "The lighthouse log has entries for the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th. Then nothing."
2. Cite the silence. "No one in the village would say her name afterwards. Not in the parish records. Not in the census. Not when the priest asked."
3. Refuse to fill in. When a listener asks "so what actually happened?" — and they will — your answer is sometimes "we don't know. The boat was empty."

Today's task

1. For one of your pilot stories, list every gap in the record you know of. Where the source stops. What was never said. Who was never asked.
2. Pick the most useful one. Write a single sentence that names the source and names the silence.
3. Place that sentence somewhere in the last third of your telling, just before the ending.

AI as a research aide

For [story / case], list every documented gap in the historical record I should know about as a storyteller. Include: which primary sources exist, where they go silent or contradict each other, what was never investigated, what witnesses were never interviewed, and what the official conclusion was. Cite sources where possible. I want the seams in the record, not a confident retelling.

A trick worth learning early: most beginner horror stories spend too much time on the monster and not enough on the rest of the day. The story works when the listener feels how ordinary everything was right up until it wasn't.

Today's exercise is to write the line of normalcy that immediately precedes the wrongness.

The principle

Before the door knocks. Before the figure in the field. Before the silence on the radio. Show the listener what your character was doing — something dull, something domestic, something that signals nothing is supposed to happen today.

The latch is the trick. The latch is what makes the field real.

Today's task

1. Find the moment in one of your stories where the wrongness first arrives. The first odd thing seen, heard, or felt.
2. Write the sentence before it. Not background — action. What were the hands doing? What was the mouth doing? What was being held?
3. Aim for something a listener could be doing themselves at that moment. Boiling water. Folding a letter. Lighting a pipe. Closing a book.

If you're stuck

In [story], the first uncanny moment is [describe the moment]. I want to write the sentence immediately before it — a small, ordinary, physical action the character is doing. Suggest 5 candidates that would have been historically plausible for a person of [their role/era] on [the kind of day described]. They should be domestic and unremarkable, not foreshadowing. The contrast is what matters.

First-chamber capstone. You've worked on opening lines, place, period detail, gaps, and the line of normalcy. Today you put one full minute of telling together and say it out loud, alone, where no one can hear you. That's the only requirement.

If you skip this, the rest of the program won't take. Storytelling lives in the mouth, not on the page.

Today's task

1. Choose one of your three pilot stories.
2. Compose 60 seconds of telling that includes: your strongest opening line, two senses and a wrong note for the place, one period detail, and the line of normalcy that precedes the wrongness.
3. Don't write a script word-for-word. Write the four or five beats as a list. You'll improvise the connective tissue.
4. Stand up. Walk to a wall. Tell it to the wall. Time yourself.
5. If you stumble, don't start over. Push through. Note where you stumbled. That's the seam to fix tomorrow.

What you're listening for

1. Did you say the opening line the way you wrote it, or did your mouth change it? If your mouth changed it, your mouth is right. Update the script.
2. Was there a moment where your voice went up at the end of a sentence, asking the listener for permission? Mark that moment. We'll fix it in Week 3.
3. Did you hit 60 seconds, or did you blow past it? If you blew past it, you're padding. We'll cut next week.

This chamber is about shape. Most folk horror tales — and most good ghost stories — quietly follow the same three-beat structure. Once you can see it, you can build to it on purpose, and you'll never lose your place mid-telling again.

The three beats

1. The world. An ordinary place, ordinary people, ordinary work. We trust this world. (1–2 sentences in a short telling, longer in a longer one.)
2. The wrongness. Something arrives, or is found, or refuses to behave. The world's rules stop applying. (The bulk of the story.)
3. The price. The world doesn't recover. Someone is gone, or changed, or marked. Crucially: this is not a moral. It's a tax.

Today's task

1. Take all three of your pilot stories. Write each one as three sentences — one sentence per beat. Don't elaborate.
2. If a story can't be told in three sentences, the structure isn't clean yet. Find the wrongness. That's the heart of the tale.
3. If you have a story whose price feels like a moral ("and that's why you shouldn't go in the woods"), reach for something stranger. The price should disquiet, not lecture.

Folk horror is full of doorways. The river crossed at dusk. The stile climbed. The wrong room entered. The door opened from the inside. Today you'll learn to identify and lean into the threshold moment in your stories — the half-second the listener's body knows something has changed.

What counts as a threshold

1. Spatial — a door, a stile, a tree line, a parish boundary, a tide turning.
2. Temporal — the last bell of the day, midnight, the moment the lamp finally goes out, the morning after.
3. Social — the first time a name is said aloud, the moment a witness breaks their silence, the first stranger to ask.

Almost every memorable folk horror moment is a threshold. The keepers' door at Eilean Mòr. Mary Heaster Shue waiting for her daughter's apparition. The Devon farmer stepping outside on the morning of the 9th. Find your threshold and you've found where to slow down.

Today's task

1. For each of your three pilot stories, name the central threshold moment in one phrase. "The door is opened." "The boat reaches the island." "The old man finally speaks her name."
2. Look at where in your telling that moment falls. If it falls in the middle of a sentence or on the end of a paragraph, move it. The threshold should sit on a beat — at the end of a breath, with a pause around it.
3. Mark it on your script. [PAUSE]. We'll work on the pause itself in Week 3.

Beginners tell stories chronologically. They start at the start, work to the end, and lose the room around minute two. Better tellers start in medias res — in the middle of the action — and trust the listener to pick up the context as they go.

Three places you can start

1. The discovery. Open with the body, the locked door, the empty room. Then loop back. (See: most missing-persons folk horror.)
2. The witness. Open with the person who has to tell what they saw. Frame the rest as their account. (See: most haunting cases — Cock Lane, Bell Witch, Greenbrier.)
3. The aftermath. Open at the trial, the inquest, the parish meeting. Then explain how everyone got into the room. (See: anything with a court record.)

The chronological start almost never wins. "Once there was a farmer who had three daughters and a piece of land near a stream…" — you've already lost. Cut to the daughter being missing.

Today's task

1. For one of your pilot stories, find the most charged moment in the timeline. Not the climax — the moment the world first notices something has gone wrong. (For Eilean Mòr, that's the relief boat reaching the island. Not the keepers' last log entry.)
2. Start your telling there. Spend the next minute working backwards as needed.
3. Say the new opening out loud. Compare it to your chronological version. Whichever one makes you lean forward is the one you keep.

If you want a structural sanity check

Here's a chronological telling of [story]. Suggest three alternative structures: (1) opening on the discovery, (2) opening on a witness's account, (3) opening on the aftermath/inquest. For each, give me the new first two sentences. Tell me which structure best serves a 4-minute spoken telling for an adult audience that wants to be unsettled, not lectured.

Every told story has a frame: who is telling this, and to whom, and why now. Beginners ignore the frame and just tell the events. Better tellers choose the frame deliberately — because the frame changes what kind of story it becomes.

Three frames to know

1. The historian's frame. "According to the parish records…" — distances you from the events, lets you sound credible, makes the gaps in the record more chilling. Best for cases with documentation.
2. The witness's frame. "My grandmother used to say…" / "There's a woman in the village who still won't speak her name…" — closes the distance, makes the story feel transmitted rather than researched. Best for folk material.
3. The guide's frame. "You're standing where it happened. The window above us is the one she was found beneath." — collapses the distance entirely. Best for in-place tours, but powerful even at a table if the place is real and named.

You can layer frames. "The official inquest concluded suicide. But there's a woman in the village who still won't say her name." That's the historian's frame becoming the witness's frame in one sentence — and the seam is where the eerie lives.

Today's task

1. For each of your three pilot stories, write down which frame fits best. Be honest — well-documented cases want the historian's frame; transmitted folk tales want the witness's frame.
2. For your most-prepared story, write the first sentence in your chosen frame.
3. Then rewrite that sentence in a different frame. Read both aloud. Notice what changes — not just in the story, but in your own voice.

We touched on this on Day 2 with opening lines. Today we go further: a cold open is the first 15–20 seconds of your telling, in which you introduce nothing. No "so this story takes place in…". No "there's this old legend." Just the body, the date, the witness, dropped on the table.

Cold opens are the difference between starting a story and starting a story that has the room.

Anatomy of a cold open

1. Sentence one: a single concrete fact. The kind of thing a coroner or a witness or a parish register would say. "At 4:30 in the afternoon on December 15th, 1900, a steamer rounded the south end of Eilean Mòr."
2. Sentence two: a second fact that sharpens the first. "The relief boat was eleven days late."
3. Sentence three: the wrongness, named flatly, no embroidery. "There was no one to meet it."

Three sentences. No adjectives doing emotional work. The flatness is what's frightening — it sounds like a report, and reports are real.

Today's task

1. Write a three-sentence cold open for one of your stories using the structure above.
2. Strip out every adjective and adverb that's trying to do mood. (No "eerie," "chilling," "unsettling.") Let the facts carry it.
3. Read it aloud. If you sound like you're reading a coroner's report, you nailed it.

Endings are where most beginner tellings die. They either explain too much ("and so what they think happened was…") or land too soft ("…and that's the legend of the witch in the cave"). Today you'll learn the two endings that actually work.

Ending 1: The unanswered question

Ends on a fact you can't reconcile. The reader walks away holding it. Best for cases where the historical record genuinely doesn't resolve.

Ending 2: The thing that stayed

Ends on a small physical detail that outlasts the events. A house still empty. A name still not said. A path still not used. Best for cases with a community memory.

Endings to avoid

1. The moralising ending. "And that's why you should never…" — kills the eerie. The whole point of folk horror is that the rules don't quite hold.
2. The summarising ending. "So that's the story of…" — assumes the listener needs help understanding. They don't.
3. The fake-doubt ending. "Was it real? Who knows? You decide." — patronising. Trust the gap to do the work.

Today's task

1. Write two endings for one of your pilot stories — one unanswered question, one thing that stayed.
2. Read both aloud. Pick the one that makes you stop talking faster after the last word.

Second-chamber capstone. You've done structure: three-beat shape, threshold, in-medias-res, frame, cold open, the two good endings. Today you put a full three-minute telling together and record yourself.

This is the longest you've worked at one telling. It will be uncomfortable. Do it anyway.

Today's task

1. Pick the pilot story that's furthest along.
2. Write a 5–7 line beat list (not a script). Beats should be: cold open, world, threshold, wrongness, price, ending.
3. Set a timer for 3 minutes. Hit record on your phone. Tell it from the beats. Don't restart if you fumble — push through.
4. Listen back once. Note one thing you'd cut, one thing you'd add.
5. Don't refine yet. Just listen, note, and stop. We'll work on the recording properly on Day 20.

What you're listening for (one each)

1. One cut. A sentence that wasn't doing work. Mark the timestamp.
2. One add. A beat where you rushed past something the listener needed. Mark the timestamp.
3. Save the recording. Date it Day 14. Don't delete it — you'll want to compare on Day 30.

This chamber is about delivery — how you sound, how you pace, how you hold the room. Before any of that, you need to know who's narrating. Not the character in the story — you, telling it. The version of you that walks into the telling.

The three useful narrators

1. The skeptical historian. Calm, dry, fact-forward. Cites sources. Acknowledges the gaps without filling them. Makes the eerie scarier by refusing to lean into it. (Mark Gatiss in A Ghost Story for Christmas. M.R. James himself.)
2. The haunted believer. Quieter. Convinced. Treats the supernatural as a serious explanation among others. Slower delivery, more pauses. Best for transmitted folk material. (Most rural informants in folklore archives sound like this.)
3. The guide who's seen things. Warm, slightly amused, with one foot in the scientific world and one foot somewhere else. Won't tell you what to believe, but will tell you what they can't quite explain. (Most great ghost-tour guides land here.)

These are not characters. They're registers — versions of your own voice, dialled to different settings. Pick the one that fits your three pilot stories and your audience.

Today's task

1. Read each of your three pilot stories aloud in each of the three registers. Yes, all nine takes. It will take ten minutes.
2. Notice which combination makes your story strongest. Sometimes it's not the one you'd have predicted — well-documented cases often want the haunted-believer register; transmitted folk tales often want the historian. The contrast is part of what makes them work.
3. Pick a default register for each story. Write it at the top of your beat list.

If you can't tell which register you're in

Listen for what your voice does at the end of a sentence. Historian's voice goes flat. Believer's voice trails off. Guide's voice sometimes lifts a half-step, like an invitation. If your voice is going up at the end of every sentence, you're in none of these registers — you're asking the listener for permission. We'll fix that on Day 16.

The single biggest tell of a beginner: they rush past the scariest line. They've been holding the line in their head for so long that when it finally arrives, they hurry to get it out and move on. The room registers the sentence but doesn't feel it.

The fix is the pause. Specifically: the half-second of silence before the line, and the full second after.

How to use the pause

1. Before the line: stop. Half a beat. Long enough that the listener's eyes come up. This signals "the next sentence matters."
2. Say the line. Slower than the surrounding text. Same volume, or quieter. Never louder.
3. After the line: a full second of silence. This is the bit beginners can't do. They feel the silence stretching and rush to fill it. Don't. The silence is what makes the line land.

Today's task

1. Take the cold open you wrote on Day 12. Mark the two pauses: one half-beat before the wrongness sentence, one full beat after.
2. Tell the cold open out loud, holding both pauses. Time the second pause. If you can't hold a full second of silence, you rushed. Try again.
3. Now tell your full three-minute story from Day 14 — but add at least three pauses. Mark them on your beat sheet. [ // ] for half-beat, [ /// ] for full beat.

Pauses are a discipline. They feel much longer to you than they do to the room. Trust this. The room doesn't notice the silence; the room notices that the line landed.

There's a specific bad habit folk horror tellers fall into: they whisper the scary parts. The whisper feels theatrical and focused. It almost never lands. Today we're going to use volume on purpose — and learn why whispering is rarely the answer.

What volume actually does

1. Going quieter at a key line makes the room lean in. This is what people are reaching for when they whisper. The reach is right; the whisper is wrong. Drop your volume by 30%, not 90%.
2. Going louder almost never works in folk horror. Loud is a tool of comedy and action storytelling. Use it once, maybe, on a single beat where the world breaks open.
3. Going slower while staying at normal volume often beats both. A flat, calm voice on the worst line in the story is the most unsettling instrument you have.

Why whispering fails

A whisper draws attention to the speaker, not the line. The listener thinks "oh, this is the scary part now," which means they're watching you instead of imagining the thing you're describing. You've broken the spell. The skeptical-historian register is more frightening than any whisper, because it stays in the world of the report.

Breath

If you can't hold the pauses from Day 16, the issue is breath. You're running out before the line. The fix:

1. Mark your breaths on your beat sheet. [ ↓ ] for an inhale.
2. Plan an inhale before any line longer than 12 words and before every key beat.
3. Inhale through your nose, low into your belly. Not a sigh. Quiet.

Today's task

1. Take your three-minute story. Mark one drop in volume on a key line — not a whisper, a 30% drop.
2. Mark one moment of going slower at normal volume on the worst line in the story.
3. Mark your breaths. Tell it through, paying attention to all three.
4. If you have a recording from Day 14, listen for where you ran out of breath. Plan around those spots.

Beginners describe scenes from outside. "There was a small cottage on the edge of the woods. Inside was a fire. Outside, footprints in the snow." Better tellers physically walk the listener through. The camera moves. The listener moves with it.

Today: rewrite a scene so the listener moves through it, not over it.

The technique

1. Pick a single observer. The witness. The constable. The first person to find what was found. Anchor the camera in their head.
2. Move the camera as the observer moved. "He came in the back gate. The yard was clean. The kitchen window was open. He could see the kettle on the hob." Each sentence is one step deeper.
3. Stop the camera when the wrongness arrives. Don't pull back. Stay there.

Today's task

1. Pick the most physical scene in one of your pilot stories. The discovery. The room. The path.
2. Rewrite it from the perspective of someone walking through it, in the order they would have seen things.
3. Aim for 4–6 sentences, each one a step deeper. Stop at the wrongness.
4. Read it aloud. If your hands moved while you said it, you got it. If they didn't, the camera is still outside.

On a tour, this becomes literal

If you tell stories on location — ghost tours, in particular — this technique stops being a metaphor and becomes a real instruction. You're walking your group through the scene. Match your sentences to your steps. Stop talking when you stop walking. Speak at the threshold.

There's a small move that, used once per telling, transforms a story from something the listener is hearing into something the listener is in. It's the second-person turn — the moment you stop saying "the farmer" or "the keeper" and say "you."

Used too much, it's a gimmick. Used once, in the right place, it's the line they remember.

How to use it

1. Once per telling. No more. The first time you do it, the listener is pulled in. The second time, they notice the technique.
2. Place it just before the wrongness. Not at the start of the story. Not at the end. In the half-sentence before the door opens.
3. Make the action small and ordinary. "You'd have heard it the same way she did — through the floorboards, three rooms away." The smallness is what carries it.

Today's task

1. Find the half-sentence before the wrongness in one of your stories.
2. Rewrite it as a "you" sentence. Keep the action small and physical.
3. Read it aloud in context — five sentences before, five sentences after. If the listener wouldn't notice the pronoun shift consciously but would feel it, you've placed it right.
4. If you can't make it sound natural, take it out. A failed "you" turn is worse than none at all.

If your story is on a real location

Tour storytellers have an advantage: the "you" can be literal. "You're standing where she stood. The window is the one she watched it from." This is the strongest version of the technique. Use it on threshold lines.

The day everyone wants to skip. Today you record yourself telling all three of your pilot stories, listen back to all three, and mark the seams. There is no shortcut. The crafts that improve fastest are the ones you can hear yourself doing.

Block 25 minutes today. It's the longest day of the program. It's the day that pays the most.

Today's task

1. Record yourself telling each of your three pilot stories. Use your beat sheet — not a script. Aim for 3–5 minutes each.
2. Listen back to each one in order, with your beat sheet in front of you.
3. For each recording, mark these specific things on the sheet:
4. → Pace. Where did you rush? Mark the timestamp.
5. → Pause. Where did you fill silence that should have been silent? Mark the timestamp.
6. → Pitch. Where did your voice go up at the end of a sentence, asking permission? Mark the timestamp.
7. → Padding. Where did you say "so basically" / "and like" / "this is interesting" / "as I said"? Mark every instance. We're cutting these on Day 28.

What this isn't for

It isn't for general critique ("I sound weird"). It isn't for self-flagellation. It isn't to make you stop telling. It's a diagnostic. Mark the four things above, save the file, and move on.

After the listen-back

1. Save all three recordings, dated Day 20.
2. Pick the story that came out worst. That's the one we work on hardest in Week 4.

Third-chamber capstone. You've recorded yourself, you've listened back, you've worked on register, pause, volume, the moving camera, and the "you" turn. Today you tell one full story to one real human.

The smallest version of this still counts. Your partner. A friend on a phone call. A patient relative. The point is a face that reacts.

Today's task

1. Pick your strongest pilot story.
2. Find one person. Tell them you're working on telling stories, and you want to practice on them. Promise them five minutes.
3. Tell the story. From a beat sheet, not a script.
4. Don't apologise before, during, or after. Don't say "this might be bad." Just tell it.

What you're learning that you couldn't learn alone

1. Where they laugh. Sometimes the listener laughs in places you didn't expect. Don't take it personally. Mark the moment — usually it's a beat that's almost too neat. We can fix that.
2. Where they go still. The body language of a real listener will tell you which lines landed. Watch for the moment they stop fidgeting. That's the line. Note it.
3. What they ask after. If they ask "is that real?" you nailed the frame. If they ask "what happens next?" your ending didn't land. If they ask nothing, the story washed past them and you need to find a stronger threshold.

After

1. Don't ask for feedback in those terms. Ask: "Was there a bit you'd want to hear me tell again?" That question gets you the real answer; "what did you think?" almost never does.

This chamber is about widening your repertoire and sharpening your set. Today you learn to research a real historical case from primary sources — newspaper archives, parish records, inquest reports — so the stories you tell carry the weight of the record, not just the rumour.

What primary sources actually look like

1. Local newspaper archives. Many are digitised — British Newspaper Archive, Newspapers.com, Chronicling America (US), Trove (Australia), Welsh Newspapers Online. A search for the date and place of a documented case usually returns a column inch or two from the week of.
2. Parish records. Births, marriages, deaths, sometimes burial notes. FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast. The gap between an entry and an absent entry is often the story.
3. Inquest and court reports. The Old Bailey Online (London, 1674–1913), state archives, county record offices. Court records are pure gold — they're testimony, sworn, recorded contemporaneously.
4. Folklore archives. The Folklore Society (UK), the Library of Congress's American Folklife Center, Dúchas (Ireland's Schools' Collection). For folk material, a 1930s informant's words are far closer to the source than any modern retelling.

Today's task

1. Pick the pilot story you know least well from primary material. Spend 30 minutes — yes, today is longer — in one or two of the archives above. Find one document you didn't have before.
2. Take notes by hand. Quote one specific sentence verbatim. That sentence is going into your telling.
3. If the archives intimidate you, use AI to scaffold the search:

I want to research [case / story / event] from primary sources. List the most likely archives and databases I should search, in priority order, and for each one give me: (1) what kind of record I'd be looking for, (2) the exact search terms most likely to surface it, and (3) what the document would tell me that secondary retellings probably wouldn't. I want to find one verbatim quote from a contemporary source — newspaper, inquest, parish register, folklore informant.

Why a verbatim quote matters

Once you can drop a real sentence into a story — "the constable's report describes 'a low and continuous scratching, as of fingernails working at the inside of a board'" — your telling stops sounding like a retelling and starts sounding like research. The room reacts differently. They're not hearing folklore; they're hearing the record.

Most historical horror stories are a mix of documented fact and accumulated legend. Beginners try to either smooth them into one or pretend they're all fact. Better tellers leave the seam visible — they tell the listener what's documented and what's tradition, in the same breath, without breaking the spell.

The technique

Two phrases will do most of this work for you. Use them sparingly and on purpose:

1. "The record says…" Followed by the documented part. "The parish register records his death on the 14th. No cause is given."
2. "The story is…" Followed by the legend part. "The story is that he'd been seen the night before, walking back from the lane, and that he'd refused to speak to anyone he passed."

Used in sequence — record, then story, then back to record — the seam between them becomes the haunting. The listener can feel where the verifiable world ends and the rumour begins, and the rumour is far more frightening for being honest about what it is.

Today's task

1. Take the verbatim quote you found on Day 22 and put it into one of your tellings as a "the record says…" beat.
2. Find the legend part of the same story — the bit that isn't in any document — and frame it explicitly as "the story is…"
3. Read both aloud in sequence. If they sound like two different temperatures of voice, you've got it. The historian's register on the documented part. The witness's register on the legend part.

What not to do

1. Don't use "some say…" or "legend has it…" — these phrases announce themselves as folklore in a way that breaks the spell.
2. Don't claim the legend as fact. The listener can sometimes tell, and the moment they catch you, the whole story collapses.
3. Don't claim the documented part is uncertain when it isn't. The verifiable parts are your credibility — protect them.

Up until now you've worked mostly with documented historical cases. Today we go further back. Folk horror — the haunting of the land itself — works on different rules. The cases aren't always in newspapers; they're in folk surveys, parish histories, and the names old maps still carry. Today you learn where to find that material.

Where folk horror lives

1. Old place names. Devil's Dyke, Hangman's Lane, Crow Wood, Black Pool. The Ordnance Survey 1:25000 maps for Britain are full of these. The US has its own versions — Dead Man's Hollow, Witch Pond, Old Indian Trail (often suspect, sometimes worth investigating). A name that scared people enough to stick is a name worth researching.
2. Pre-Christian survivals. Wells, stones, hilltops, trees. The hag who lives at the spring. The boundary stone that bleeds. These often predate the village around them by a thousand years. The Folklore Society's Folk-Lore journal (1890–) is the deepest archive.
3. Regional spirits. Black Shuck (East Anglia). The Bean-Nighe (Highlands). The Tommyknockers (Cornish and American mining). La Llorona (Mexico, US Southwest). Each region has its own roster, and each is its own oral tradition.
4. Calendar customs. Things people did on specific days for specific reasons that everyone has now forgotten. The wassail. The mari lwyd. The straw bear. The eerie sits in the unbroken practice — these aren't reenactments, they're survivals.

Today's task

1. Pick a region you live near or care about. Spend 20 minutes finding one piece of folk material from that region you didn't know — ideally one tied to a specific place name, custom, or seasonal date.
2. Write down: (1) the place / custom, (2) the story attached to it, (3) one detail that makes it specifically of that place, not transferable to anywhere else.
3. If you want a starting point:

I'm researching folk horror material specifically from [region]. Not the famous cases — the ones a researcher would find in folklore journals, parish histories, or local antiquarian sources. Suggest 5 lesser-known pieces of regional folk material — a place name with a story attached, a custom or calendar survival, or a regional spirit. For each, give me: (1) a one-sentence summary, (2) where it's documented, (3) what makes it specifically of that place rather than a transferable folk motif. I want depth and specificity, not the Wikipedia roster.

Why this widens you

Documented historical cases are powerful, but they're a narrow band of folk horror — they're cases that ended up in newspapers. Most of folk horror lives below that line, in the practices and place names that never made the record at all. The tellers who can move between both registers — the inquest and the wassail — are the ones whose repertoires don't get exhausted.

A tin of stories — five tales, varied length, varied register, ready to tell on demand. This is what working storytellers carry. By the end of today, you'll have one.

Three of these you already have — your pilot stories. Today you add two more, and you sort the lot for use.

What goes in a good tale-tin

1. One short, light story (90 seconds). For warming up a room, between heavier tales, or when a group's energy is too high. Folk humour with a dark edge — the cunning man who outwits the devil, a regional trickster, a Stingy Jack.
2. Two medium stories (3–4 minutes). The workhorses. Documented historical cases, three-beat structure, one threshold each.
3. One longer story (5–7 minutes). For when you have the room. More detail, more layered frame, more pauses earned.
4. One signature story (any length). The one that's specifically yours — researched harder, told often enough that you know every breath. This is what you become known for.

Today's task

1. Take stock of your three pilot stories. Slot each into a category above. You'll see the gaps.
2. Pick two new candidates to fill the gaps. Don't draft them yet — just pick. Use the prompt below if you want help shortlisting.
3. On a single page, write your tale-tin: five titles, five lengths, five registers. Tape it inside a notebook or save it as a note. This is your set list for the rest of your storytelling life.

I have three folk horror / historical stories in my repertoire: [story 1, length, register], [story 2, length, register], [story 3, length, register]. I'm building a five-story tin: one short and light (~90s), two medium (3–4min), one longer (5–7min), one signature. Suggest 6 candidate stories that would fill the gaps in my current set. For each, give me: title, approximate length when told, register (historian/believer/guide), and what it adds to the variety of my tin. Bias toward well-documented or well-archived material, not modern retellings.

On the signature story

Don't pick your signature today. Pick it after Week 4 — let it emerge from which one keeps wanting more time. The signature is the one you research deepest, tell most often, and keep refining for years. It's not a starter pick.

If you tell stories regularly — at tours, dinners, gatherings — you'll start using the same opener and closer across multiple tellings. Today you write them on purpose. They are the bookends that signal "a story is starting" and "the story is over."

What an opener does

It's not a story-specific opening line (we did those on Day 2). It's the line you use to enter the storytelling register. To shift from chatting to telling. The room hears it and quietens.

1. Examples that work: "There's one I want to tell you that I've been thinking about." / "This one's from the parish records." / "Right — this is the one from [place]."
2. Examples that don't: "OK guys, get ready, this one's a banger." / "You're not gonna believe this." / Anything that overpromises.

What a closer does

It signals the story is over without summarising it. Without saying "the moral of the story is…". Without breaking the register.

1. Examples that work: A held silence, then a quiet "that's the one." / A looking-up motion, then "anyway — your glass is empty." / Just sitting back. Saying nothing. Letting them speak first.
2. The strongest closer is silence held three seconds longer than feels comfortable. Most of the closers above exist because tellers can't hold the silence. The silence itself is the closer. The phrase is just permission to release the room.

Today's task

1. Write three candidate openers and three candidate closers. Aim for short, calm, slightly understated.
2. Try each one on a small story. Read them aloud.
3. Pick the opener and closer that feel like you, not like a stage version of you. Mark them on the front of your tale-tin sheet.

Storytelling lives in real rooms with real people, and real people interrupt. Today is the day we talk about handling the skeptic, the drunk, the kid in the front row, the person who knows the story already, and the person whose phone keeps lighting up. None of these will go away by being ignored. All of them are manageable.

The skeptic

Will say things like "that's not actually true, is it?" or "there's a rational explanation." The mistake is to argue. The move is to absorb.

1. Default response: "You might be right. The Northern Lighthouse Board investigation said something similar — that one keeper was lost and the others died trying to recover him. Their report has been disputed for over a century." You've made the skeptic's point part of the story. They feel heard; the room stays in the spell.

The drunk

Will be loud, repetitive, and occasionally affectionate. The mistake is to chastise. The move is to use the structure of the telling itself.

1. Lower your volume by 30%. The room will lean in. The drunk, who is responding to social energy, will quieten down to match — or get more obvious, in which case the rest of the room will manage them for you.

The kid

Tells you when the room is too dark. Pay attention. Adjust pitch — keep it eerie, lose the harder content. Folk horror works for kids if you stay on the threshold and never cross it. The unanswered question and the thing that stayed both work; explicit violence does not.

The know-it-all

Will say "oh, this is the one with [spoiler], right?" before you've gotten there. The move is to make them a co-conspirator.

1. Default response: "You know it. So you'll know the part the official record doesn't include." Then continue. You've absorbed them and promised them new material. They almost always quieten down.

The phone

Don't address it. Don't break the register. The pause is your tool — when a phone lights up, the room becomes self-conscious. Hold a pause two seconds longer than usual; the owner of the phone will put it away. If they don't, they're not a person you can reach today.

Today's task

1. Pick one of the five room situations above. Write your default response in your own voice. Practice saying it out loud, calmly.
2. Repeat for one more situation. Two prepared responses are enough — the rest you'll adapt on the night.

If you're going to tell these stories on location — a tour, a graveyard walk, a literal walk-and-talk — you have one more layer of work: the route. Today you walk it (or a stand-in for it), time your tellings, and find where each story actually fits.

If you don't tell on location, today is still useful: walk a loop in a park, time your stories aloud, and learn how each one breathes when you're moving. Storytelling doesn't sit still.

Today's task — for tour-tellers

1. Walk your full route. Don't tell stories yet. Just walk it and notice where the natural stopping points are — a doorway, a corner, a churchyard wall, a bridge. Mark them on a map or in notes.
2. Walk it again. At each stopping point, tell the story you'd assigned to it. Time yourself. Note where the timing breaks — too long for the corner, too short for the bridge.
3. Adjust assignments. Sometimes the right move is changing the story; sometimes it's changing the spot.
4. Add a transition line for each leg between stops. "The next one happened in a house that used to stand where the bank is now." Transitions are part of the telling — don't leave them to chance.

Today's task — for everyone else

1. Walk a loop in a park or quiet street for 15 minutes. Tell each of your three pilot stories aloud while walking, in turn.
2. Notice: which story wants walking pace? Which one wants you stationary? Which one accelerates when you walk?
3. This tells you which stories belong in walking contexts and which belong sat down. Useful information when you pick your set on Day 29.

What you're learning

Stories breathe at different speeds. A historical case with a lot of detail wants stillness — the listener is doing imagination work and walking distracts them. A folk tale tied to a landscape often wants motion — you're moving through the land it's about. Knowing which is which means you can place stories where they work, instead of fighting the room.

Penultimate day. You've built a tale-tin, found a signature opener and closer, learned to handle the room, and walked your route. Today you tell four stories back-to-back as a single set. Not a tour yet — just the set, sitting down, with whoever will sit through it.

Why a set, not just one

A single story tests your craft on that story. A set tests something different — your ability to shape an evening. The transitions between stories. The variation in length and register. The moment in the middle where the room sags and you have to pull them back.

Today's task

1. Pick four stories from your tale-tin. Order them deliberately:
2. → Open with a medium story. Not your strongest — you're calibrating the room.
3. → Second: the short, light story. Resets energy. Lets the room breathe.
4. → Third: your strongest medium or your longer story. The set's centre of gravity. The one you came to tell.
5. → Close with another medium. Calmer than the third. Sends them out, doesn't try to top the centrepiece.
6. Write a transition line between each story. "The next one is from about thirty miles south of there." / "This is also a parish-record case, but a generation later." Transitions are bridges. Don't skip them.
7. Tell the set, in order, to your audience of one or to the recorder. Total time: 12–18 minutes.

What you're listening for

1. The drop. Around story three, ten minutes in, the room's energy will dip. This is normal. The recovery — the way story three's first beats pull them back — is what you're rehearsing. If your story three opens slow, you'll lose the room. Open with the threshold itself.
2. Pace contrast between stories. Two slow stories in a row will feel like one long story. Make sure light sits next to medium and medium sits next to long. Variation is rhythm.
3. Your own breath at the end. If you're winded after the fourth story, your stories are too long for one sitting; trim. If you're fresh, you've earned a fifth — but save it for the capstone tomorrow.

Last day. The capstone is a 30-minute mini-tour — four or five stories, with transitions, in front of a small group of people you've assembled on purpose. It can be in your living room. It can be on a route you walk. It can be at a friend's bonfire. The point is: it's an event, called as one, and you stand and tell.

Today's task

1. Find 3–6 people. Tell them you've been working on this for thirty days and you'd like to tell them four stories. Promise 30 minutes.
2. Use your tale-tin set list from Day 29. Use your signature opener. Use your transitions. Use your closer.
3. Tell it through. Do not apologise before, during, or after.
4. When it's over, take whatever silence comes. Don't fill it. Watch the room move.

After

1. Listen back to your Day 14 recording — the rough three-minute take you saved at the end of Week 2.
2. Tell the same story now, today, fresh. Record it. Compare.
3. The change is the proof. Not just in pace and pause and pitch — in register. The version on Day 14 was someone telling a story. The version on Day 30 is a storyteller.

Where you go from here

1. Keep your tale-tin alive. Swap one story out every few months. Add new ones from new research. The tin is forever; the contents rotate.
2. Tell often. The craft erodes without use faster than any of us want to admit. Once a fortnight is the minimum dose. Once a week if you're serious.
3. Record once a month. One story, told fresh. Listened back to. The four diagnostics from Day 20 — pace, pause, pitch, padding — never stop being useful.
4. Find your signature. Over the next year, one of your stories will keep wanting more time, more research, more refining. That's the one. Become known for it. Then build the next one.
